Sightsavers works with partners in more than 30 low – and middle income
countries across Africa and Asia to eliminate avoidable blindness and promote
the rights of people with disabilities.
Our vision is of world in which no one is blind from avoidable causes and where
people with disabilities participate equally in society. We aim to ensure that eye
health services are inclusive, equitable and affordable to all, especially women
and people with disabilities.
We work to promote inclusive education, giving all children the chance to learn,
lead and thrive. We also support the inclusion of adults with disabilities through
projects focusing on economic empowerment and political participation.
Sightsavers Ireland is in operation for 20 years and Sightsavers global was
founded in 1950 with over 75 years’ experience in development and eye health.
Sightsavers Ireland works directly with the global Sightsavers organisation to
implement programme work providing oversight and input from all levels of the
organisation to ensure maximum impact.
The primary component of our work which involves IDEA is our Global Citizenship Education programme which is Irish Aid funded. It has informal, formal and non-formal education components and is quite broad based in terms of Development Education engagement. Sightsavers
Ireland Global Citizenship Education programme focuses on increasing
awareness of disability inclusive development and our projects in West and
central Africa funded by Irish Aid. We are delighted to be an IDEA member and work alongside our colleagues and partners. Visit www.sightsavers.ie for more information.
