BACKGROUND
Sian Cowman is a self-employed educator, researcher, and
social journalist, specialising in climate change and environmental justice
issues. Her skills include detailed research, writing, content creation and
editing. Sian also has extensive experience in facilitating and leading
workshops and training sessions, as well as chairing and managing events. She
spent years working in Latin America on environmental justice issues,
accompanying groups and communities resisting fossil fuel and mining projects.
Her previous roles include Coordinator of the Latin America Solidarity Centre
and Education Officer with Friends of the Earth Ireland.
She has recently completed an MA in Critical & Creative Media at Maynooth
University, where her research focused on journalism and far-right movements in
the context of Covid-19 anti-lockdown protests. Her other education
achievements include a Postgraduate Specialisation in Epistemologies of the
South from the Latin American Council of Social Sciences. A fluent Spanish
speaker, Sian is also experienced in translation work and consecutive or
simultaneous interpretation into English.
CURRENT PROJECTS
Sian is currently managing a pilot programme of a new
Junior Cycle Short Course in Climate Action, working as part of a team
with Educators for Sustainability to support secondary school teachers with
training and resource-sharing. She is also writing a handbook in climate
justice education for the City of Dublin Education Training Board (ETB), as
part of their Adult Education Service’s first Climate Justice Education
Strategy. Sian is also a research assistant in UCD for Education in a Warming
World, a global consortium of university lecturers and researchers working on
the climate crisis.
