BACKGROUND
Lourdes
Youth & Community Services (LYCS)
is a community development project based in Dublin’s North-East Inner City.
LYCS seeks to empower local people to play a part in transforming their
communities through Global Citizenship Education. This involves exploring
issues relevant to the community (e.g. drug crime and abuse, poverty,
inequality, education) from local and global perspectives. LYCS offers a
variety of learning opportunities, prioritising people living locally and those
experiencing poverty and social exclusion.
CURRENT PROJECTS
LYCS’ Global
Citizenship Education programme provides opportunities for people to explore
the development challenges faced locally, in Ireland, and in communities around
the world, and empowers them with information and knowledge to act on these
inequalities. It fosters critical
thinking, active citizenship, and a sense of a shared struggle for a fairer and
more equal world. LYCS has played a key role in engaging with the Development
Education sector and Irish Aid to promote an understanding of how local-global
learning can be an effective educational tool for the community sector.
Current
projects:
LYCS provides
services to approximately 250 people each week and promotes the integration of
Global Citizenship Education into its five programmes of work: Early Years
Centre; Youth Work Programme; Community Training Centre; Adult Education
Programme and Community Employment Scheme.
