BACKGROUND
The Department of International Development grew out of the Kimmage Development Studies Centre and transferred to Maynooth in 2018. International Development is an important vehicle for just transformations in our world, and our work is underpinned by a commitment to inclusivity, diversity, equality and justice. Focusing on local and global development issues, we support critical engagement at personal, local, national and international levels.
We facilitate learners to understand the causes of poverty, inequality and injustice around the world while supporting them to question understandings and responses to the international development challenges we all face.
Studying international development prepares people for careers in local and national government, transnational organisations, non-governmental organisations and activism. Graduates work in community development, global education, development policy, and project management. They can be found in humanitarian and conflict contexts, working on issues such as human rights, gender, climate action, justice, migration and empowerment. Please see this link.

A number of students from overseas attend the programmes each year through Irish Aid fellowships. The Department is also involved in research, including in the area of development education, and capacity building through the KODE open and distance learning programme it offers online. It also works in partnership with Comhlámh on the First Wednesday public debates and interviews, and with other departments at Maynooth on the University’s festival of Food Sovereignty held annually.
