Children in Crossfire

BACKGROUND

Children in Crossfire was founded by Richard Moore who was blinded at the age of 10 by a rubber bullet fired by a British soldier during the Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Children in Crossfire responds to the rights and needs of children and young people caught in the crossfire of global poverty, injustice and inequality. The NGO is active in Tanzania and Ethiopia. Development education at home is an important part of its work.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Development education helps people to understand global connectedness, including the structural causes of poverty and how it is sustained. Children in Crossfire’s development education programmes aim to foster emotional resilience and critical thinking to help young people become active changemakers.

"Educating the Heart" is an accredited continuous professional development programme (previously known as TIDAL) for primary and post primary teachers, to support educators as they encourage students to become compassionate and active citizens. It is funded by Irish Aid. The organisation also runs the Compassionate School Awards.

Children in Crossfire, which is based in Derry, produces teaching resources to complement the curriculum on both sides of the border. These include teaching packs to complement the Educating the Heart programme, and resources on human rights, water and other topics. Children in Crossfire has also produced the Little Book of SDGs, a summary of the Sustainable Development Goals.
