A Partnership with Africa

BACKGROUND

A Partnership with Africa (APA) is an Irish charity that supports a partnership-based approach to development. APA has projects in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Kenya working on preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, engaging with domestic workers and bar workers to challenge exploitative working conditions, ensuring community inclusion of ethnic minorities and the establishment of clean water sources for rural communities. APA works closely with the Italian NGO CVM. APA also engages with Development/Global Citizenship Education in Ireland.

CURRENT PROJECTS

APA works directly with 10 post primary schools in Dublin, Leinster and the West of Ireland on development education.

Get up and Goals is a European Union/Irish Aid funded initiative implemented in Ireland by A Partnership with Africa. The project aims to increase awareness of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Development Education (DE) amongst educators, young people and their communities.

Project activities include: 

• Advocacy and campaigning to help create conducive policy responses to the Global Goals
• Working with student teachers and practicing teachers to embed SDG content and DE approaches across subjects/short courses
• Supporting post-primary students to undertake SDG-related actions in their communities.
• Supporting the Schools Climate Action network, which has organised the Irish Fridays for Future climate strikes.
• Examples of student activities include a school in Mayo, close to Lough Mask, which engaged in outreach with farmers at marts, and a school in Tullamore, which set up a minicompany to sell reusable water bottles which will fund other SDG actions.
