A Partnership with Africa

BACKGROUND

A Partnership with Africa (APA) is an Irish charity that supports a partnership-based approach to development. APA has projects in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Kenya working on preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, engaging with domestic workers and bar workers to challenge exploitative working conditions, ensuring community inclusion of ethnic minorities and the establishment of clean water sources for rural communities. APA works closely with the Italian NGO CVM. APA also engages with Development/Global Citizenship Education in Ireland.

CURRENT PROJECTS:

1.    Global Education Time

APA is working directly with a number of post primary schools in Ireland on the Global Education Time (GET) Project. It’s Global Education Time (GET) is an EU-DEAR & Irish Aid funded initiative designed to enhance national Global Citizenship Education (GCE) strategies in eight EU countries and help integrate GCE within secondary school curricula. Along with partners in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Poland, Portugal and Spain, the project is led in Ireland through the charity A Partnership with Africa (APA). The GET project builds on the work of the Get up and Goals Project 2017- 2020 www.getupandgoals.euti

Over 3 years 2024-2027, the overarching aim of the project is to develop and share teaching and learning units aligned with national curricula around four key challenges: Migration, Climate Change, Gender Equality and Global Inequalities. In Ireland the resources have been developed in line with the Junior cycle curriculum for Geography, History and CSPE.  A key aim is to maximize the use of the teaching and learning units through teacher training and online visibility campaigns.

2. Charity Shops

APA is also working on plans to link our education work with the work of our 3 charity shops in Athlone, Carlow and Hackettstown. Given the extensive use of charity shop volunteering as a work experience opportunity for Transition Year and Leaving Certificate Applied students, this project aims to create a space where students can reflect on the work of charity shops in the context of climate change and inequalities from many angles. In collaboration with other partners we plan to develop a toolkit for post primary students volunteering in charity shops to foster greater awareness of the value of charity shops.
